XY is an original musical that follows Chris, an intersex man navigating his first romantic relationship while he is haunted by his past. On the advice of doctors, Chris’s mother subjects Chris to corrective genital surgery as an infant and raises him as a girl. At 26 years old Chris is a lonely fitness instructor who has transitioned back into being a man. He is estranged from his mother and is haunted by memories of his female eleven-year-old self, Christine. When Chris unexpectedly falls in love with Nuni, his memories--which follow Christine’s attempt to assert his male identity despite his mother’s insistence that he is a girl--haunt Chris with increasing intensity.

XY is a musical drama about letting go of the past and coming home to the most unfamiliar of places: ourselves.

History of Development

XY was presented at the 2018 National Alliance of Musical Theatre Conference (NAMT), and the piece will receive readings at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and the Village Theatre in 2019. XY has been developed in the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop (Moderated by Stephen Schwartz, Michael Weiner and Joe DiPietro), the Dramatists Guild Fellows Program, the Johnny Mercer Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals, the Ball State University Musical Theater Festival, the Musical Theater Factory Writers Group, a a residency at the Ucross Foundation and through a grant from the New York SongSpace. Aria Entertainment produced a public staged reading of XY at The Other Palace Theatre, and the show was selected for the “Bound for Broadway” concert at the Kaufman Center in NY. I am developing XY with one of my favorite partners in crime, director and creative developer Hunter Bird.
